(major) part of the reason we are chasing Japanese government and nagging them for an apology gesture is because this moral high ground is probably the only high ground we have over Japan, at least as measured by recognized metrics, such as economy, culture influence, technology and probably science too.

if situation were just the opposite, if we were exporting electronics, autos to Japan, if we were outsourcing our companies to Japan for low labor cost, if Tokyo downtown were flush with Chinese restaurants sporting Chinese neon signs and waitresses cladded in traditional Chinese attires [what it is, I don't know.] to attract Chinese weekend golfers, then we probably wouldn't be much bothered that they are still smirking and repudiating.

just my personal opinion.
