I agree with you that Yahoo should not turn in any personal information to the Chinese Government. However, I think Yahoo is not the only company that should bear this responsibility.

Yesterday while listening to NPR during my drive home, I was also shocked to learn that US companies actually allow US government access to ALL their communication by agreeing to install a splitter on their main optical fiber lines. Quest is the only company that refused because it viewed the request illegal.

Business is in a tough position when domestic and international politics are involved. Their main goal is to grow their business and make money for the stock holders. Politics should not be their main concern. Yahoo certainly was not strong enough to go against the Chinese government, even if they want to. It would be great had Yahoo taken the leadership and showed the world that it would not want to become a part to Chinese government's political crackdown. Unfortunately the reality is that not many companies are willing to run the risk of losing their business in China. I believe any CEO who did that alone may run the risk of being over seated by stock holders these days.

I think the hearing in a way is only a political show. If these politicians really want to show their distain on Chinese government's practice, they should act strongly with the President to secure the release of the political dissidents.
