看了一本有关29年大萧条的书,是76年出版的。其中叙述的危机前后政府的行为,
特别所谓保守派的危机前减税,危机后处理,对比现在的危机很有意思。下面是两
段摘录:

and unheeded signs of collapse to come. Under Presidents Warren Harding
and Calvin Coolidge (and to a lesser extent under Hoover), the government
sought to identify the nation's welfare with that of businessman. The conventional
economic policy of laissez-faire was based on the idea that if the government
kept from "interfering" with the economy, business profits would be shared
with workers in the form of wages; the workers, in turn, could invest in
stocks and thereby partake of general wealth. Most Americans shared this
view. Coolidge went so far as to state that "this is a business country
and wants a business government," and his Secretory of the Treasury, millionaire
Andrew Mellon, acted accordingly. Federal spending was slashed. So were
taxes for the well-to-do (so their earnings could be reinvested in expansion)
