Or in general,for an NxN board (N is an even number), I think the answer is

2^(NxN)/2^(2N-1)

For N=2, it's 2
For N=4, it's 2^9=512
for N=6, it's 2^25
for N=8, it's 2^49

Does this look right?

I was thinking about different combinations and didn't think of it this way until I saw your answer.Who is the smart guy?:)
