I totally agree with you. I think the cold fusion should be ranked the No. 1 scientisfic hoax of the century.
In fact when I was at MIT in 92, Julian Schwinger, the genius who shared Nobel Prize with Feymann and Tomanoga on the QED work, provided theoretical calculations in support of the cold fusion phenomenon. He presented the paper in the old fashion way - by reading the manuscript. Not a single slide was shown.
I believe the two scientists, a chemist and a physicist were either fired or forced to resign. I don't think they did it on purpose. But they totally forgot about the basics of scientific research when facing a potentially revolutionary discovery.
Another interesting thing that I encountered at MIT was a conference for alien abductees, organized by a MIT Professor.
