The Worm
One of the most common misconceptions is that tequila has a worm in the bottle.

The worm is only found in mezcal bottles, not tequila!

The worm is known as the gusano -- and it's not really even a worm, but a butterfly larvae -- and it's only used in a few varieties of mezcal.

Sal de gusano (salt, chili powder, and ground gusano) is extremely popular in Oaxaca, and quite tasty when sprinkled liberally on lime and orange slices. Yum!

The worm is highly prized as an aphrodisiac by many mezcal drinkers, although this is not a Mexcian concept.

Since the agave worm inhabits only the species of the agave plant that Mezcal is made from, the agave worm signifies genuine Mezcal, made the traditional way.

The worm isn't there for looks. It is meant to be eaten. Because it is believed by many that within the worm lies the key. Some say it unlocks the door to a world of wondrous experiences. Others say it sets free a spirit of celebration. Still others say that eating the worm locks in the enchantment and excitement of Mezcal.

The worm then holds different keys for different people. And there's only one way to see what yours will open. Try it.
