Hi TD,

I lived in the western suburb of Chicago a few years ago.
Here is something that might be helpful to you. Have you checked
the following site?

http://www.kentlaw.edu/adm/housing/

You may want to check their 'popular apartments'(somewhat
expensive but apparently very convenient)and to register on
their 'roommate wanted list' to try your luck. One problem
of living in Chicago is there are too many choices. Your
college is at a very convenient place to reach by public
transportation (you're just one block away from the famous
Union Station). So you can live a little bit away from the
downtown area and take train/bus to go in and out.

If you opt to do the daily commute, I'd suggest you look
westwards, find a place (apartment/room in a house etc)in the
western suburb and take the train (very convenient).

One more suggestion is that you might want to keep away from
some of the so-called rough areas. From what I know it seems
you may not want to live near UIC, U Chicago, and IIT main
campus (not the site you'll be). That said, you could be ok
if you somehow know what you're doing (e.g. helped by locals)
even in those areas, sometimes two very different neighborhoods
are separated by just a single street.

Hope you enjoy your stay there, it's a nice city in many ways.
