May be I should put a few words on why you remind me of my friend.
It was long long time ago, I hope my memory did not fail me that I take his family name as Liu.
However, I do remember that once he described me a fighting event between his classmates. “I saw blood…”, then he asked: “why?!”
From his description, I saw God, I saw Buddha. I was certain that he had the “root of enlightenment” (“Hui-Gen”).
Read you essays I cannot help to recall that moment.
Your essay is emotionally powerful. You have the same “Hui-Gen.”

However, I do not have “Hui-Gen.”
I am more into the power of logic instead of emotion.
Frankly, I do not see logic power in your essays. I only see emotion jump around, I failed to see the link, LOGICAL one: I do not have the “Hui-Gen.”
For example, the fact that someone doing something in a devoted fashion, paying heavy price for that, LOGICALLY, does not justify the value of the action. (But emotionally, it may…)
As Chinese, we can have a lot of life examples: the red guards in Cultural Revolution….

So the oversee priests in China, devoting, paying heavy personal price, LOGICALLY, does not justify their action as “good” or “bad”.

But “onlooker” is right, you should have different audience.
I do not have “Hui-Gen.”
