My observation is that the Church has done many good things too and is looked upon by majority of people (at least American) as the guiding light for morality and spirituality. To its members, Church serves many social functions and offer the sense of community and belonging. To society as a whole, Church organizations have done much to help the poor and needy and offered tremendous help in disaster relief.
Church as an institution has its own merit. Otherwise it would not have survived so long.
