Derie
Derie woke up and stretched. She looked at her digital clock by the side of her bed. It
was 8:37. She grimaced, then went back to sleep. She could hear the phone ringing, but
her parents usually got up early in the morning and they would probably answer it. She
began to doze off.

Samantha
Samantha tried desperately to call Derie, but nobody had been answering. She went
into a huge panic. How could Derie have forgotten the dress rehearsal for the concert? If
only she lived right next door to her like she used to! Right now the only thing she could
do was to go to the music school and try to reach her there.
Samantha reluctantly drove to the music school. As soon as she arrived there, she
went straight to the pay phone and made the call. This time, Derie answered.
"Hello," she said in a sleepy voice.
"Derie, where were you? Don't you remember that this morning at 8:45 was the dress
rehearsal?"
Samantha could hear Derie hit her head with the hands." What? Oh, how could I
forget?" she moaned. " I'll be there in a jiffy.
Samantha knew how bad Derie felt. Derie was one of the best players in the orchestra
and she would definitely feel as if she had let the orchestra down.

Derie
Derie had never felt worse in her life. Missing a day of school? No problem. Missing a
rehearsal, that was very bad.
Derie took a bus to the music school. All through the ride, she was scolding herself
about how absent-minded she was. She felt so bad inside and she was almost sure that
this would affect her competition. She almost started crying but managed to detain
herself. She wished that time could go back, so she could get up again and go to the
rehearsal on time, or that time could speed up so she could arrive there quicker and get
over the punishment she was sure she was going to have. It was unbearable for her to be
where she was now.
When Derie finally got to the music school, she was very tired. Her face was all red
from all that energy she used and her legs were shaky. It did not seem as if she would be
able to walk another step.
When she looked at her conductor, she forgot all her pain. Mr. Larnsonsburg looked
very angry. First of all, he had a mean looking face even when he was not angry. Now, he
looked like the meanest human you have ever looked at in your life. Derie felt as if time
had suddenly frozen and that she was lost in space. Mr. Larsonsburg was sure to scream
at her.
To her surprise, he did not. Mr. Larsonsburg instead just sighed heavily and his mean
face changed to one that was very disappointed. Derie could do nothing but sink into her
chair. She had never felt worse in her life.
All of a sudden, the silence broke and the rehearsal went on as if nothing had
happened, but for some reason, it just made Derie feel worse.
