Derie
It was at orchestra and Mr. Larsonsburg was announcing to the class about another
competition coming up in about three months. Derie, however, could hardly pay attention
to this, however, she was thinking about her conversation with Samantha. She was
debating with herself whether she should sign up or not. She wanted to take Samantha's
advice and sign up, but what if she lost again. What would happen then? Then she
remembered Samantha's advice: `Take risks that are for your own good, for your own
future.'
When Mr. Larsonsburg finished his announcements. He asked for the names of people
who wanted to take part in the competition. Derie's hand went up first.
Derie looked at Samantha and caught her smiling.

Samantha
Samantha noticed how much Derie changed during the past few weeks. Ever since
she signed up for that competition, she still wasn't the Derie she once knew. This Derie
was friendly, nice, and caring. This Derie seemed to have experienced and defeated fear.
This Derie was her friend. This Derie was someone who she was proud of.

Derie
Derie spent a lot of time practicing. She found herself improving a lot. Mr.
Larsonsburg gave her several pieces of music that she could do for the competition. Derie
had been looking at the music forever. She was sure she would do well during this
competition. She might even win!
Mr. Larsonsburg also seemed to notice the new Derie. He began treating her like he
used to again, moving her to the front again and acting like she was a mature seventeen
year-old again.
Derie was extremely happy. How good was it to live her old life again!
December 4, 2002
Derie
It was the day for the competition. This time, it would be at school time, (study hall,
unfortunately) and Derie's legs were shaking with nervousness. She decided to just play
and have fun. This time, winning did not matter.
This time, when Derie entered the room, her face joined the faces that were nervous.
When Mr. Larsonsburg called her, her face changed from being nervous to being
determent.
When Derie placed her bow on her strings, a beautiful, ringing melody came out.
The music became more and more magical and soon it was taking all the listeners into
another world. They felt emotions they never felt before. When she was done, Derie was
sure she had tried her best and if she didn't win, she would try harder next time.
Derie listened to the other people play. Even someone without musical experience
would be able to tell that she played twice as well as the others did. Derie felt very
confident. She was sure she had a good chance of winning.
It was unanimous! Derie won! She felt better than she had ever felt in her life! Now she
understood why Samantha gave her that lecture. I was to face her fears rather than avoid
them.

Derie, Samantha
Derie was shaking like two years ago, when she had entered the room that had
changed her life. She and Samantha were waiting for their grades on the SAT. They just
had to know.
When Derie got her's, she found herself barely able to move. It ended up as Samantha
tearing the envelope open for her. She dared to peek in.
"Yes! I did it!" Derie jumped up. She hugged Samantha and yelled. She was so happy
she didn't care who was looking and whether or not she would get in trouble for doing
this. All she could care about was that she had achieved a lifelong goal! Her career was
complete!
