I would buy a digital camera with CompactFlash instead of SmartMedia or Memory Stick.
For less than $400, Cannon Powershot Sxxx should be a good choice. Cannon G2 could be found for < $500.
Sony is always overpriced and Nikon is too expensive and their low-end cameras are not outstanding.
