Six queens are the best you can do. Because when you put them at the edge, you limited their controlled area as much as possible. When you put them cross the diagonally, you limited their controlled area by overlapping. Even then, the queens at 1c, 2a, 7h and 8f control all except four: 3g, 4g, 5b, and 6b.
