Atlanta Hartsfield retained its title as the world's busiest passenger airport last year as numbers rose to 76.9 million, an increase of 1.3 percent over 2001.
Atlanta was followed by Chicago O'Hare (66.6 million) and Los Angeles LAX with 56.2 million passengers.
London Heathrow was the busiest outside North America with traffic of 63.3 million.
Figures released today by Airports Council International-North America showed that although more than 1.3 billion people boarded planes last year, passenger numbers were down by 2.6 percent.
Cargo in the region was unaffected by the slump and showed a 1.7 percent increase during 2002.
Memphis International remained the busiest cargo airport in the world, handling over 3.4 million metric tonnes - an increase of 28.8 percent over its final 2001 numbers. Like Memphis, 40 percent of the world's top 10 cargo airports registered double-digit increases in cargo, according to ACI-World Headquarters, producers of the Airport Traffic Report.
Toronto's Lester B Pearson International was Canada's busiest airport in two of the three categories, ranking 17th in North America for passengers (25.9 million) and 23rd in total movements (383,189).
"The decline in traffic can be attributed to a number of sources, mainly the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, as well as dramatic changes in airport security and an increased number of airline bankruptcies," said ACI-NA president David Plavin.
"The recent war with Iraq, the outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome and the constant threat of terrorism have carried that decline into 2003," he added. "Well into the travel season for this year, the good news is that recent figures are promising and are a clear indication that passenger traffic is rebounding."
