Professor Gao were my M.S and Ph.D advisor. Honestly speaking he is most respectable person I have ever met for his high moral standard. Under all the circumstance
he never say anything that was not from his mind or heart. His broad knowledge spanned from science to engineering, from sports to politics all has give me unforgetful memory. To be a visiting scholar to England in 1985 and France in 1993, each time I went to him to make a copy of that country's map from his World Atlas he bought from US in early 1950's. Before to France he said if it was not expensive please buy one for me because his was already out of date. I remembered it and wanted to do it, but only found they were all expensive. When I returned fron France I bought an "OX" for him as I thought that was more valuble. Looking back I realized we were in different level in value judging.
There was a little comfort when I handed him a world atlas last year when I visited him, I could see how delighted he was while receiving the book. Still a little regret as that was a paper back one, professor Gao deserve a precious grandeur hard cover one! This year I came across a book sale and found a very thick and wonderful HARD COVER world atlas, I bought it and thought to myself I would give Professor Gao when I met him next year. Now I can only keep the atlas as a permanent memory.
