I have to admit that I did not see the inconsistencies of the age when I read the story. Lao Dao is more careful. I usually don't question the logics of most of the fictions I read. I'd rather immersed into the story and believe everything the writer is telling me to enjoy the experience. The recent tiger the moon picture story in the news made Lao Dao suspicious, dare I say perhaps TOO suspicious?
I thought the story was quite well written, especially the first and the last chapter. I found it amazing that the writer, after so many years, can still describe the psychology of a teenaged girl so vividly. I think that is the difference between an artistic person and the rest of us. Our view of the world and the things around us evolves as we grow older. It is difficult for most of us to switch into the view of a younger 'us' - at leas for me. The ending of the story is a quite reflection of a more realistic view of how dreams from our youth have ended up. I think I am not alone in stating that we can see part of us (gentleman) in the images of the young violin player. Those are the innocent times.
